New immigration rules allowing postgraduates to work in the UK
The Home Office has introduced new immigration provisions which will allow all UK recognised Master’s degree and PhD graduates, starting their courses on or after 1 May 2006, to apply for leave to remain in the UK to work for 12 months. The scheme is an extension of the current Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme which has, until now, only been available to Science and Engineering Graduates. Under the new rules postgraduates of all subjects will be able to apply for the scheme.
In his Pre-Budget Report in December 2005, the Chancellor made the following announcement:
“Ensuring the UK remains one of the most attractive places for students to study abroad requires concerted action from both the sector and government…To help the sector seize the benefits of globalisation the Government will [amongst other things]…allow all international students on completion of a postgraduate degree…to work in the UK for up to 12 months”.
The International Office welcomes the news and recognises the opportunities this will offer the University's international postgraduates. Gaining work experience in the UK is extremely important for international students. It not only gives them the opportunity to build on and develop their skills in an international workplace, it also gives them invaluable experience with which they can pursue their chosen career in an extremely competitive marketplace.
