Otago Recognised as One of World's Top 100 Universities
6 October 2006
The University of Otago is ranked 79th equal in a global ranking of best universities in the world, published today.
The world university rankings, produced annually by The Times Higher Education Supplement, were topped by Harvard University, followed by the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.
Five factors are considered when calculating the rankings: a survey of 3703 academics worldwide, where participants are asked to identify up to 30 universities they consider best for research within their own field of expertise; data from 736 graduate employers from around the world; the ratio of faculty-to-student numbers; the university's success in attracting foreign students; and its success attracting internationally-renowned academics.
University of Otago Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Gareth Jones says the ranking is not something that should be considered in isolation. "However, it does show that Otago is a world-class university that is competitive when compared to top research universities throughout the world.
"And it is amazing when you look at the funding universities have in this country, compared to some other countries - that we do so well. What shines through is the high quality of so many of our staff."
